Waybill, Fee - Read my lips (1984, BGO Records, BGOCD283)

Reunited with producer David Foster, Fee Waybill assembled an all-star cast for his meisterwork, recruiting such luminairies as Toto's Steve Lukather, Jeff and Steve Porcaro, and guesting on backing vocals was the then unknown Richard Marx and former Toto frontman Bobby Kimball. With so many members of Toto present it's hard not to compare a lot of Fee Waybill's repertoire to the Toto back-catalogue! The real difference, however, were Fee's wacky and imaginative lyrics.
There really is a wealth of diverse material on offer here, such as You're still laughing, wich is mock Van Halen, thanks to the twiddling guitar of Steve lukather, although it's the vocal harmonies that really bring to song to life. Nobody's perfect, meanwhile, is a real teaser, starting off with a multi-layered riff, before veering off into pseudo-funk, yet somehow Lukather manages to retain that heavy edge.
The highlight on Read my lips is, without doubt, Who said life would be pretty. Driven along beautifully by the Toto gang, this peach of a toon contains one of the most original chorus lines ever. Get a load of this: "And there's no guarantees/No symphonies/Who said life would be pretty/Open your eyes, there's no free ride/Who said life would be nice..."
Read my lips is one of the great sunken treasures of tasty American A.O.R.! (Xavier Russell, Kerrang!)
