The best of both worlds is a Van Halen compilation album that also contains three new song (the frist new Van Halen songs since Van Halen III). Van Halen released this album (July 2004) to accompany the extended 2004 Van Halen Tour. There are enough new songs written to release a complete new album, but because of the tour there was no time to record and finish more than three songs: the single It's about time (with Luke on bgv), Learning to see and Up for breakfast.
Eddie Van Halen: "Sammy and I got together [late last year] and it was like we hadn't missed a beat. We picked up right where we left off. The moment we hit the studio and started making music--which, for us, is ... where it [all] began--that kind of solidified it. That was it. Making music is the center of this band--that, and the friendship. So it was a no-brainer."
Sammy Hagar: "Ed and Al probably had 10 other songs that we could have worked on, and if there'd have been time, we'd have loved to have done a whole record. But the idea of, 'Do you wanna go out on tour this year or next year?' was like, 'Let's go now! Let's go now!'"
Steve Lukather: "Yes I DID do some BG's on the new Van Halen stuff. Ed and Al are brothers from the 70's and I love those cats alot! The new stuff is REALLY cool and sure to make VH fans rabid for more. It was cool they asked me. I think I am a good luck charm for them. Every VH record I have sung on entered the charts at #1! Too bad it doesn't work for me, hahaha."
