Udo Jürgens was born as Udo Jürgen Bockelmann in Klagenfurt, Austria on 30th September 1934.
His childhood was spent in his parents 800 year old home, Ottmanach Castle and he then went
on to study music at the Konservatorium, Klagenfurt, Mozarteum, Salzburg and finally the
Alfred University in New York.
Udo has released a plethora of albums during his long career but among the most interesting
releases are Udo live '77 from the ZDF T.V. broadcast on which he sings Walk away
(English version of Warum nur warum) with the Supremes, Buenos dias Argentina an
album of self-penned football songs recorded with the German World Cup Squad of 1978,
and a beautiful album recorded in Italian.
Udo has never broken into the British market and nowadays is little known in England
(except to the Eurovision fans). He has recorded two albums in English Let's sing Udo,
which includes such standards as Down by the riverside and He's got the whole world in his
hands - not quite Udo's style - nowadays he composes the music to all his own songs.
His other English album Leave a little love includes Walk away though he loses a
lot of his style when singing in this language. Matt Monro, however, had enormous success
with his recording of this song. Matt Monro also recorded another of Udo's songs
Du sollst die Welt für mich sein under the title Without you. Udo's songs have been
recorded by many other International Stars as well - Caterina Valente, Brenda Lee,
Sacha Distel, Bing Crosby, Jean-Claude Pascal, Sarah Vaughan to name a few.
